Knockshanahullion Solstice Walk 2019
In 2019 the winter solstice is actually on Sunday December 22nd, but the morning of Saturday December 21st suits most people better, so the event is being run on that morning.
Check-in will be at Clogheen Community Hall (Eircode E21 T264) from 6.30am, with buses departing for Knockshanahullion at 7.00am.
Buses bring participants part way up Knockshanahullion (along the road past Shanrahan cemetery). The walk is 6km long and will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, depending on fitness levels. The terrain is stony paths and open mountain with a gradual climb to the top requiring moderate fitness. It involves a climb of 199 metres from the bus drop off point to a height at the summit of 652 metres. There is a Bronze Age burial mound at the summit with incredible views across the Galty Vee valley. Sunrise is at 8.40am.
Participants should bring head or hand torches, Hi-Viz jacket (it will be dark when setting out), walking poles, good quality walking boots, warm clothing (gloves & hat), weather proof clothing and water for the duration of the event.
On return to Clogheen there will be a hot breakfast roll and hot drinks, with gluten free options available. There will also be music in the community hall and free entry into the Christmas draw.
No dogs allowed and all participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
There are only 150 spaces and this event booked out very quickly in 2018. If you wish to take part please do be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.
The cost for the event is €15.00 which includes buses, walk stewards and refreshments after the event.
