We are really looking forward to welcoming the Eamon Bulfin Legacy Pipe Band who will join us for our parade in Newcastle on Easter Monday @ 11:30am.
The Eamon Bulfin Legacy Pipe band are travelling from Argentina to be part of the Liam Lynch Commemoration pipe band parade in Fermoy on Easter Sunday and will also travel to Newcastle on Easter Monday to join our parade through Newcastle Village.
Eamon Bulfin was an Argentine-born Irish republican. Bulfin was a member of the Irish Volunteers and the IRB and was heavily involved in the Easter Rising. He was stationed in the GPO and took up his position on the roof of the GPO, and raised the “Irish Republic” Flag that flew over the GPO during the rising.
After being interned at Frongoch prison, Bulfin escaped the death sentence because he was born in Argentina and was deported to Buenos Aires.
Éamon de Valera made Bulfin Irish Representative to Argentina. De Valera described Bulfin’s job as to “inaugurate direct trade between Ireland and the Argentine Republic, to co-ordinate Irish opinion in the Argentine, and to bring it into the Irish demand for a republic.” While carrying out these duties, Bulfin maintained a close line of communication with Irish Republicans. Released in 1919, he co-ordinated fundraising and arms shipments from there until he returned to Ireland in 1922 becoming active in local politics in County Offaly, the county of his family’s origin.
We are really looking forward to welcoming our guests from Argentina and we are sure they will receive a Céad míle fáilte go dtí an Caisleán Nua.

With thanks to Tomás MacCormaic and our friends in the Liam Lynch Fermoy Commemoration for arranging this visit.

This morning we were delighted to officially launch our Centenary Commemoration Weekend for General Liam Lynch which will take place across Easter Weekend 8th-10th April to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of his death.

The village of Newcastle has had a long association with commemorating General Liam Lynch since the original committee of volunteers and locals formed to build the Liam Lynch Monument back in 1934. Our committee has continued to hold a commemoration and mass for Liam Lynch in Newcastle in April every year since then.

We are delighted to officially announce our plans for a weekend of commemorative events from Sat 8th- Easter Monday 10th April.

Tickets will go on sale on the 1st March and will be available online at www.liamlynchcommemorationnewcastle.ie and in local shops.

We have a full programme of events that we hope will honour the memory of a great leader who gave his life for Irish freedom and we look forward to welcoming large crowds to Newcastle for this Centenary Commemoration.

Born at Barnagurraha near Mitchelstown, he is credited with playing a pivotal role in helping to organise the Irish Volunteers in Cork, serving as Commandant of the Cork No2 Brigade of the Irish Republican Army during the War of Independence.

Lynch was vehemently opposed to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, famously saying “we have declared for an Irish Republic, and will not live under any other law.”

After initially opposing the seizure of the Four Courts in 1922, Lynch joined the garrison and was arrested by Free State forces and later released on the understanding that he would try to halt the fighting. Instead he set about reorganising resistance, even planning the establishment of a ‘Munster Republic’, which he believed would hamper the development of the Free State. Lynch was fatally wounded during a skirmish with Free State forces in the Knockmealdown Mountains on April 10, 1923 and laid to rest in Kilcrumper two days later. Buried in the Republican Plot in Kicrumper Old Cemetery, he rests along side fallen comrades: Michael Fitzgerald (Fermoy) Daniel Shinnick (Castletownroche), Michael Rouse (Ballindangan) and Denis O’Brien (Kilworth).

His death shocked the nation and was widely regarded as one of the key motivations behind the decision by army Chief of Staff, Fran Aiken to declare a ceasefire on April 30, 1923.

Rest in Peace.

The Historic Graves project is a community focused grassroots heritage project. Local community groups, in our case here in Newcastle it was the BN&B CE Scheme are trained in low-cost high-tech field survey of historic graveyards and recording of their own oral histories. They build a multi-media online record of the historic graves in their own areas and unite to form a national resource. The project outlines a system and sequence which helps to co-ordinate and standardise an historic graveyard survey.

Community groups are trained to use digital cameras and smartphones to survey historic graveyards.

Both new and old survey records are combined with locally recorded audio and video stories to form a multi media record of a graveyard.

By curating and publishing the survey records centrally the individual community graveyard surveys combine to form a national resource where the value of each survey is compounded by its association with others.

The website allows visitors from Ireland and across the globe to freely explore and search the growing database of multimedia records and stories.

It allows communities to self publish historic graveyard surveys and the related multimedia stories.

The surveys are being funded by a number of Local Development Partnerships through LEADER funds and are supported by Local Heritage Officers, County Archaeologists and Local Authorities.

People, institutions and organisations contribute to the project in three ways 1. voluntary works 2. permission 3. funding.

We now spend a lot of time working with community groups to get funding for training surveys and uploads. And starting in April 2018 we are asking people who use the website to crowdfund new surveys. Every penny (except Paypal charges) will go to new surveys.

The website and survey methodology have been designed and built by Eachtra Archaeological Projects.
